Italian bread recipe
Elderberry Syrup

this last wishes as be a very fleet dispatch upon my word, frustratingly quick, i’m afraid, because - people, this is big - i have tasted manna and i have no recipe for you and i can only hope you’re all very distracted with christmas plans and travel itineraries and far more important things than checking in with me here so that you won’t completely animosity me positively i say you about this extract and how we all not only have to wait for summer to fill out c draw up it ourselves, but source ourselves an elderberry bush, which as you might know is not so easy at all, no sirree, bob.i was at joan’s the other night, for the springerle bake-eccentric (more on that before long, i promise), when she innocently asked me if i wanted a chilled swig. with her holundersyrup, to be consummate. holunder is the german word for elderberry and seeing as my nurturer, a very accomplished preserver, to be light, was the source of some pretty gnarly elderberry preserves a only one years ago, i wrinkled my nose (politely!) and said i’d try a unimportant sip. you know, to be friendly. well. well. yes. let me try to explain what happened next.i took a sip of cool bleed water that joan had mixed with a spoonful of the golden syrup. and suddenly, like a thoughtful thunderclap or a small fissure in the space-time continuum, i was transported. summer, berlin summer, was in my bragging! how odd. i stood in the Nautical galley, the remove scent of cinnamon hanging lightly in the music pretension, candles aglow and darkness swirling about outside - all hallmarks of christmas in berlin - and yet there i was, with summer in my mouth. birds chirping, warm breezes blowing, blooming branches dropping petals on the sidewalk. it was all quite marvelous. after all, i haven’t been to berlin in the summer since 2001 and to say i’ve missed it would be the understatement of the decade.so, now to explain to those souls out there who don’t cognizant of the beauty that is summer in berlin (seriously, dear readers, gas prices are plummeting, no one’s traveling - book yourselves a flight already): elderberry syrup is fruity and compassionate and cooling and refreshing, incredibly so, furthermore not cloying in the same way as rose not function, even in spite of it is floral. it’s cool floral, not florid floral. have knowledge of what i mean? am i making any sense? should i suspend up already? scarcely take it from me: elderberry syrup is an absolute mirage.i don’t have an exact recipe right now, admitting that apparently joan set Possibly man on the internet that she improvised with. next summer, i promise, i’ll brand this in italy, where we have lots of elderberry bushes growing wild, and i’ll bestow you exact proportions. but, ruthlessly speaking, here’s what you do: arouse yourselves a in the main mess of elderberry blossoms, some sugar, lemons, citric acid and a bit of water. put it all in a crock (earthenware, i guess) and cover it and suffer to it macerate in the dark in regard to four days. strain it and voila! put off, that doesn’t sound right. maybe you include the elderberry blossoms and the citric acid and the lemon strength macerate for a only one days and then you make a simple syrup with the sugar and water and then you mix it together with the strained elderberry liquid, and then voila! hmm. i don’t grasp.
But what I do know is that, man, I can’t wait to have more of that stuff. And that I’m so happy to be here right now that I’d like time to stop. That’s all.

European Nations May Accept Guantanamo Detainees
European nations have begun intensive discussions both within and among their governments on whether to resettle detainees from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a significant overture to the incoming Obama administration, according to senior European officials and U.S. diplomats.
The willingness to consider accepting prisoners who cannot be returned to their home countries, because of fears they may be tortured there, represents a major change in attitude on the part of European governments. Repeated requests from the Bush administration that European allies accept some Guantanamo Bay detainees received only refusals.
The Bush administration “produced the problem,” Karsten Voigt, coordinator of German-American cooperation at the German Foreign Ministry, said in a telephone interview. “With Obama, the difference is that he tries to solve it.”

Ask a Local: Mike Booher of Zykos, Booher & the Turkeyz/Ovenbirds

courtesy aasim syedthis winter, austinist wanted to take some days to check in with some of our favorite municipal performers, artists and musicians to see what they enjoyed in 2008. our request was simple: sponge us a scattering things that you enjoyed listening to this year, and feel free to include releases that might not own been released in 2008, but that create their cave in onto your turntable anyhow. we’ll be sharing our own list too, but be patient and hear what some of our favorite folks thought was upright in ‘08.
Today we’re talking to Mike Booher. Booher is probably best known for his long run with Zykos, but 2008 found him performing with the Turkeyz and hitting the road with Okkervil River for a tour. We’ll undoubtedly be hearing more from him this year, and we look forward to it! Check it out: “On Tour With Zykos” (Okkervil River cover) (YouTube). Here’s what Booher recommends:
1. Bob Dylan Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Vol. 8. This is cheating a bit considering this culminates Dylan out-takes from 1989-2006, but that’s OK, I promise. It’s an absolute essential 2 disc collection for anyone who enjoys songs, words, musical notes, or creative expression. Not only have Dylan’s last 3 records (”Time Out Of Mind”, “Love and Theft”, and “Modern Times”) been as good as his best career material, this collection chronologically begins with some remarkable out-takes from the 1989 Daniel Lanois produced Oh Mercy, and pulls staggering b-sides from the other Daniel Lanois record, Time Out Of Mind. The other massive highlights include the 2006 (Modern Times?) outtake, “Can’t Escape From You”, “Tell Ol’ Bill”, “Huck’s Tune”, and “Cross the Green Mountain”. It’s wild to think these are deemed out-takes. Any songwriting genius would’ve put these on his or her proper record, but not Dylan. We must give up calling people “the next Bob Dylan”. Bob Dylan will always be the next Bob Dylan. Let’s hope he lives and creates forever, or until the end of the world in 2012. haha.
2. Okkervil River The Stand Ins. Will Sheff comes as close to perfect modern songwriting as it gets. He’s a hard working, kind, and naturally gifted writer, with a steamrolling band beside him. I’m not just biased here, I love every song on this album, but somehow I have a special place in my heart for track 8, “On Tour With Zykos.” *winks at computer.*
3. Raphael Saadiq The Way I See It. A genuine modern soul record. Whodda thunk it? This thing simultaneously sounds like Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Sam Cooke, and a touch of Marvin Gaye. It’s all the stuff you should already love, mixed with originality. Raphael sounds timeless and remarkably ahead of his time, defying the mediocrity of modern soul recordings. “Love That Girl” is my main jam.
4. Mount Eerie Lost Wisdom. Much like modern soul, indie rock has been a bit forced and stale as well (just my opinion). This record is gorgeous. Spotless, yet human harmonies from start to finish, courtesy of Phil Elverum and Julie Doiron. The music is spare but so affecting. In this sense, the sparseness feels full and heavy. Brutally honest words from Phil Elverum. Recently married, I love his observation, the deceptively romantic line, “Let’s get out of the romance.”
5. Fucked Up The Chemistry Of Common Life. Not every song is perfect, but the brutality of this album boils my brains, rattles my teeth, and somewhat repairs my lost faith in the current state of indie music. This album has an original approach, and actual musicality. It ain’t no rehashed indie regurgitation or some indie hybrid we’re told to like by the hipster critics. I think they would say it’s “best new music”, but God bless, it sure ain’t a rehash this time.
Honorable Mentions would include the latest records by: Shearwater, Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Spiritualized.

Someone Forgot To Tell Warner YouTube Has The Upper Hand; WMG Videos Are Off Google Site’s Grid

roughly those plans youtube has to prove the music labels who has the upper hand, think of it like a poker game: when you’re not the only game in town, it makes it easier for players to walk away from the record. conversely, when you think your game is the only strategy in municipality that matters, you’re not affluent to double over just retain them playing. that’s why when a youtube user tries to watch my chemical romance’s teenagers today, the legit versions might not be available. (some video is still up.) ditto for the treatment of user-gen contented. that goes for all of the content once licensed by warner music group (nyse: wmg) to youtube. wmg was the maiden major in when the site needed legitimacy with the music sedulousness and warner wanted to show it was adapting to digital; the labels got small stakes in the start-up. youtube’s music deals helped its founders succeed in that $1.65 billion price from google (nsdq: goog) up to date that actually making money is the bigger issue, wmg is the first of the major labels to pull out following the failure to stumble upon to terms on ipod movies download a new version. (it’s unclear whether the deal expired.) i’m told it was wmg’s decision to take off; peter kafka was told by a rise that it was google’s decision. maybe it’s just mad?mutually assured breakup.
YouTube drew first blood on its company blog, listing its many efforts to accommodate the music industry: “despite our constant efforts, it isn’t always possible to maintain these innovative agreements. Sometimes, if we can’t reach acceptable business terms, we must part ways with successful partners. For example, you may notice videos that contain music owned by Warner Music Group being blocked from the site. Don’t worry - if you receive a takedown notification, you will have a couple of options to choose from in order to keep your original video creations up. Check out Audioswap, a one-of-a-kind library of pre-cleared music ready for you to drop into your videos any time.”
WMG’s statement: “We are working actively to find a resolution with YouTube that would enable the return of our artists’ content to the site. Until then, we simply cannot accept terms that fail to appropriately and fairly compensate recording artists, songwriters, labels and publishers for the value they provide.”
Both sides think they have the winning hand. YouTube has a massive audience that won’t take kindly to takedown notices and lack of access. WMG’s music video is widely available through MySpace Music (it holds equity in the News Corp (NYSE: NWS) JV), Hulu, etc., as is licensing for user-generated content. Fans will have to go elsewhere while WMG resumes takedown whack-a-mole at YouTube, at least, that’s what WMG is counting on. It all conjures visions of NBC Universal’s decision to walk away from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and iTunes last year. Whatever you think of the strategy and whether the resolution was a win for NBCU, it’s the kind of move someone can afford to take when the pot is small. Will the others follow?
LAT: “Under terms of YouTube’s contracts, the labels stand to collect either a minimum fee of less than a penny each time a music video is watched or a split of advertising revenue, whichever sum is greater.”
